Kyoto temple with autumn leaves

Kyoto’s sights are scattered to the east, north, west and south of the city, and doing them in the wrong order means spending half a day on buses. This guide sorts the 15 classics into five areas, with admission, time needed and what pairs well on the same day. Access details and crowd tips are in the individual articles.

How the areas work

Kyoto five sightseeing areas and their main sights
  1. Higashiyama — Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Ginkaku-ji. Connected on foot.
  2. Fushimi — Fushimi Inari and the sake breweries. 5 minutes from Kyoto Station by train.
  3. North — Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji. Bus territory.
  4. Arashiyama — bamboo grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryu-ji. 16 minutes by JR.
  5. Central — Nishiki Market, Nijo Castle, Kyoto Station. Your base for moving around.

Do one or two areas per day. Putting Higashiyama and the North on the same day costs you 90 minutes in transit alone.

  • Uji — 20 minutes by JR. Byodo-in temple and matcha.

A simple 3-day structure

  1. Day 1: Fushimi Inari (early) → Kiyomizu-dera → Higashiyama streets → Gion (evening)
  2. Day 2: Arashiyama (early bamboo) → Kinkaku-ji → Ryoan-ji → Nishiki Market for dinner
  3. Day 3: Ginkaku-ji & Philosopher’s Path → Nijo Castle → souvenirs at Kyoto Station, or a Nara day trip

The timed version with budget is in the 3-day Kyoto itinerary. For choosing a base, see where to stay in Kyoto; for the airport, Kansai Airport to Kyoto.

Getting around

  • Bus one-day pass ¥700: pays off from the fourth ride, but buses between Higashiyama and the North sit in traffic.
  • Subway + bus one-day pass ¥1,100: if you will also use the subway.
  • Trains first: Fushimi Inari (JR), Arashiyama (JR) and Gion/Kiyomizu (Keihan) are faster by train. Only Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji really need the bus.
  • IC card (Suica/ICOCA): works on every bus, train and convenience store. Top up at stations.
