Kansai International Airport (KIX) is about 100 km from Kyoto Station. There are two train options, a bus and a taxi, and the price ranges from ¥1,700 to ¥30,000. The short version: the Haruka express if you have luggage and want certainty, the limousine bus if you want to sit down once and not change, Nankai + subway if you are travelling light and on a budget, and a taxi or private transfer split four ways if you land late at night.
The four options compared

| Option | Time | Fare (adult) | Frequency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR Haruka express | about 80 min | ¥3,110 (non-reserved) | every 30 min | luggage, reliability |
| Limousine bus | about 90–105 min | ¥2,800 | every 30–60 min | no changes, a seat |
| Nankai Rapi:t + subway/Keihan | about 110 min | about ¥1,700–2,200 | every 30 min | budget, light luggage |
| Taxi / private transfer | about 90 min | ¥25,000–35,000 | on demand | late arrivals, 4+ people, kids |
Fares as of October 2026. Haruka non-reserved fares change in peak seasons — check JR West’s Haruka page.
JR Haruka express
- Direct from Kansai-Airport Station to Kyoto Station, stopping at Tennoji and Shin-Osaka on the way.
- Non-reserved ¥3,110; reserved about ¥530 more. Non-reserved cars fill in peak season, so board at the airport, where the train starts.
- Luggage racks for large suitcases, so nothing in the aisle.
- Arrives at the west end of Kyoto Station’s conventional platforms (around track 30), nearest the Hachijo exit.
- Buy tickets at the airport station machines. Foreign visitors can get a discounted Haruka ticket online (JR West “Kansai Airport Express Haruka” ticket), usually cheaper than the counter fare.
Limousine bus
- From bus stop 8 on the first floor of Terminal 1 straight to Kyoto Station Hachijo exit.
- ¥2,800, with a return discount. No reservation needed, but if a bus is full you wait for the next.
- Highway traffic can add 30 minutes or more, so leave extra time for the return trip to the airport.
- Luggage goes in the hold, so the cabin is uncluttered.
Nankai + subway or Keihan (cheapest)
- Nankai Rapi:t limited express (¥1,490) or Airport Express (¥970, about 45 min) from Kansai-Airport to Namba.
- From Namba, Midosuji subway line to Yodoyabashi then Keihan Line to Kyoto — Keihan drops you at Gion-Shijo or Sanjo, handy for the Gion side.
- Or Hankyu from Osaka-Umeda to Kyoto-Kawaramachi if you are staying around Shijo-Kawaramachi.
- Two changes, so skip this with two or more big suitcases.
Taxi and private transfer
- Fixed-fare taxis to central Kyoto run ¥25,000–35,000; for four people that is ¥7,000–9,000 each.
- If you arrive late — the last Haruka leaves around 22:00 and buses end around 23:00 — a pre-booked transfer is the practical choice.
- Have your hotel’s address in Japanese ready.

Which to choose by arrival time
- Morning to late afternoon: Haruka, no question. Then to your hotel from Kyoto Station.
- After 20:00: hurry for the last Haruka (around 22:00). If you miss it, the limousine bus or a transfer.
- Flying into Itami (ITM) instead: the limousine bus to Kyoto Station takes about 55 minutes, ¥1,340. For domestic flights, Itami is the closer airport.
When you reach Kyoto Station
- Most large hotels are on the Hachijo (south) side; the main bus terminal is at the Karasuma (north) exit.
- Coin lockers at both exits; large ones ¥700. If they are full, use the staffed luggage storage.
- For choosing a neighbourhood, see where to stay in Kyoto; for your first evening, the 3-day Kyoto itinerary. If you arrive mid-afternoon, Fushimi Inari (5 minutes from Kyoto Station, open 24 hours) slots in nicely.
